Growing Roses May be Easier than you Think
Over the last several weeks, as I’ve toured several gardens around the country, I’m reminded that in spite of the beauty of roses in a garden, they are one of the most feared plants to grow.  Some gardeners try and succeed at growing pristine specimens, others attempt and give up, and some never try, waving the white flag before even getting started.

Companion Planting in the Rose Garden
Companion planting in the rose garden incorporates planting a variety of plants with roses to achieve color combinations and texture interest for esthetic value.

The Importance of Rose Bed Amendments
Autumn is the best time in our region to prepare a new rose bed. The bed can be at the existing soil level, or it can be raised and bordered with landscape timber, stone, brick, etc. If you desire a bed that is level with the surrounding soil, dig down about eighteen inches and discard the clay. The remaining clay in the bed needs to be tilled to a depth of six inches and then mixed with the amendments. The amendments and their volumes will be described later in this article.

Controlling Fungal Disease on Roses
To ensure that your rose lives much longer than its little hour, one needs to protect the plant from certain diseases, the most prevalent of which are fungal diseases. This month’s rose garden tip concerns fungal diseases and how to control them.

The Allure of Fragrant Roses
Thomas Moore wrote, “You may break, you may shatter the vase, if you will, but the scent of the roses will hang round it still.”  The wonderful scent of roses should be enjoyed in both your garden and your home.
